The Turkish Health Care System

The implementation of health reforms in Turkey over the last ten years has helped state health provision and made comprehensive health care available to all. These reforms and subsequent improvements have made Turkey a destination for health tourists attracted by high-quality services and competitive prices.
Even so, health care quality can vary from region to region. If you’re moving to a major city such as Istanbul or Ankara, you’ll be near good quality private hospitals with English speaking staff. If you’re living in rural areas and smaller towns, you may find health care access a challenge.
Foreign nationals have a choice of:
> Joining the state health care system (which includes making regular contributions) or
> Accessing a growing network of high-quality private hospitals and clinics.
After you have lived in Turkey and contributed to the state social security system for more than a year you will have access to the state’s public medical care. You will also need a valid residence permit — but International Private Medical Insurance (iPMI) is recommended for comprehensive cover and access to the best quality care and treatments.
Despite reforms and improvements, Turkey’s public health care system is not up to European standards and you, like most expats, may choose to have iPMI and use private medical facilities. Booking appointments at a private clinic is easy and many have English-speaking call centres.
Those working in Turkey who are still subjects to their own social security legislations are not deemed to be insurance holders. This include people working in Turkey for short periods of time on behalf of non-Turkish companies or under their own name. iPMI is recommended for these individuals and emergency services can still be accessed for free.
For European expats, the European Health Insurance Card (free medical treatment in the EU), is not valid in Turkey.

Real Estate

With its unique position at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Turkey has played a pivotal part in the world’s history. The country has acted as a barrier and a bridge between two continents and became a focal part of a trade route that not only brought prosperity to the country but laid the groundwork for the rich cultural mix that exists in the country today.
Turkey is a vast country, over three times the size of the UK and some 25% larger than France. Straddling between Europe and Asia, with almost 7,000 kilometres of Mediterranean, Aegean and Black Sea, Turkey is home to a unique mosaic of cultures, diverse landscape and dynamic social make up.

If you are looking for property overseas, wish to buy a holiday home in the sun, a place to retire or purely real estate investment in an upwardly mobile country, then no search is complete without having a good look at Turkish real estate for sale.

Where to invest in Turkish real estate?

With an average annual GDP growth in excess of 8% for 2010 – 2012 period, Turkey has posted exceptional economic performance compared to the EU zone and indeed to BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India, China). In 2011 and 2012 Turkey’s economic expansion was only second to China. IMF estimates that Turkey will yet again outperform most BRICs countries and certainly the entire Euro zone in 2013 – 2017 period with an average annual expansion of 5%+ projected. Turkish real estate industry is currently one of the major growth sectors within Turkey. With a youth population of over 60% of entire 76 million and increasing wealth in the country, domestic demand for the Turkish real estate industry is fast climbing. Turkish real estate agents association estimates that by year 2015 there will be a shortage of around 2 million quality housing in Turkey just to accommodate domestic demand, this is not even counting the booming tourism sector, 6th most visited country in the world in 2011, which also puts a heavy demand on coastal hotel, villa and apartment projects. In 2011, property market in Turkey grew by some 18% compared to year before. Considering that at the same period Greece, Spain and Portugal came close to announcing bankruptcy underlines the viability of owning property in Turkey.

After translation and control processes are completed, the document is prepared with the signature of the translator and other seals for the certification of the notary. Notary certifies the document after examining and so process is over.

Driving license

If all the new regulations for foreigners and having to retake your driver’s test scare you, here’s a guide on how things operate in Turkey and how to exchange your non-Turkish license

Much has changed in the time of coronavirus as many of us have been displaced, stranded or simply chosen not to leave the confines and safety of Turkey, while many others are trying to seek sanctuary in this stunning country at this time when so many things in the world are awry.

With the higher risk of coronavirus-infection in crowded places like public transportation, it has become more important for many expats to have a valid driver’s license in Turkey. While this task may seem daunting to some, I recently went through the process myself, and I am here to tell you that it isn’t that difficult and is entirely doable.
Foreigners in Turkey are allowed to drive on their foreign license for up to six months from their date of entry into the country. When the six months’ period is over, foreign residents must acquire a Turkish license to continue driving legally and be securely covered by their car insurance, should they have an unfortunate accident. There are two routes for foreigners to ensure they have a valid Turkish driver’s license, which are:
converting their original license
or applying to obtain a Turkish driver’s license from scratch, which is also the method for foreign nationals who do not have a driver’s license and intend to obtain their first license here in Turkey.
Converting a foreign license is relatively straightforward and is handled by the registrar’s office, in Turkish “Nüfus Müdürlüğü”, which offers appointments online or by phone. You will, however, need to provide a diploma, a medical clearance, a blood type card, proof of address and a criminal report (obtained by the local court or via Turkey’s online public services platform e-Devlet), all of which are requirements in either case, whether you are converting your license or applying for a new one. When you do convert your foreign driver’s license to a Turkish driver’s license, you will need to relinquish your original license, which is then returned to the issuing authority, which for some can be a major drawback to this option.
A major point when it comes to converting a foreign driver’s license is that not all countries are included in the U.N. Convention granting authority to convert licenses and thus some countries’ licenses, such as those issued in the United States or Australia, are simply unconvertible. If you are a citizen of those countries and want to live in Turkey for longer than six months and drive, then you must obtain a brand-new license in Turkey. This involves taking a theoretical driving course, lasting approximately three weeks, successfully passing a theoretical driver’s test, taking a few weeks’ worth of driving lessons and then finally and passing the physical driving exam; then that hard-earned Turkish license is yours!
